Day 19. Help a Child this Christmas

19% of Children May Not Receive a Gift This Christmas

Parents worried about how they will afford their Children’s gifts this year.

According to research published in 2020, one in five children (19%) are unlikely to receive any Christmas presents at all. More than half the parents surveyed said they were worried about how they would afford Christmas at all.

Save the Children found that parents who were planning on buying their Children Christmas presents, would have to make the following compromises:

  • Nearly a quarter (23%) said they would have to use a credit card
  • Almost 1 in 6 (16%) said they’ll have to keep the heating off when it’s cold
  • More than 1 in 10 (12%) will have to sell or pawn something
  • More than 1 in 10 (12%) will have to cut back on food for the rest of the winter

Currently, there are 4.2 million children in the UK living in poverty, and 139,000 are homeless in temporary accommodation. For these families, affording the basics such as food, heating and clothing is a stretch. So it goes without saying, Christmas presents are not a priority.
