“A reduction in police complaints in North Yorkshire should be welcomed, and is hopefully an indication that customer service and the quality of policing is improving.
“However, I remain concerned that part of that reduction is also a reflection of the complaints system not being fit for purpose and the public losing confidence in police investigating the police. North Yorkshire has the highest rate of upheld appeals in cases where there are claims complaints were not recorded when they should have been, which is worrying.
“I am committed to improving how the public are treated within the complaints system, but also how North Yorkshire Police learn from that feedback. New legislation will soon come into force allowing for the addition of much-needed independence to the process, and I plan to use these changes to ensure both the public, and police officers and staff, can have increased confidence in the complaints system.”
