Develop your skills shaping policing in a ‘career enhancing role’

The Joint Independent Audit Committee (JIAC) supports the governance of both organisations, whilst assisting the Commissioner in discharging statutory responsibilities in holding North Yorkshire Police to account.

The Chair, who will commit to approximately 12-16 full days per year, will receive £1,500. Another four Committee Members will commit to approximately 8-12 full days per year and are required to each attend four meetings a year, these are voluntary unpaid roles, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

The first stage in setting up a new Committee is to appoint an independent Chair. David Portlock, who took on the role four years ago, is encouraging young professionals looking to develop their career, and retirees who want to utilise their skills, to apply.

The 67-year-old chartered accountant, said: “The Committee gets involved in all aspects of what the police force and the Commissioner do. It’s not just about numbers and accounts, it covers much more, such as risk management and treasury management. Anyone who becomes a member will be exposed to a number of areas which will probably be wider than what their day job entails. Depending what stage of the career members join, it could be a career enhancing role.”

“Current membership is made up of a team of like-minded professionals trying to achieve the same thing. None of us know everything but by working with others you learn a lot and get different perspectives. One of the things I really enjoyed is working with North Yorkshire Police professionals with a different discipline from me, which helped to develop other skills.

“The role of the audit committee, and certainly my role as Chair, is to contribute to North Yorkshire Police’s and the Commissioner’s aim of having a first class governance framework.”

Applicants must be over the age of 18, live or work in the North Yorkshire area and be able to attend meetings at the Commissioner’s office in Harrogate or Police Headquarters (Newby Wiske and subsequently Northallerton) during the working day.
