Available to all ages. NHS Service who offer free confidential sexual health services. Also offers free and confidential postal tests for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV and syphilis for men and women 16 years old and over

Footsteps (CRS Women’s Provision)

Referrals ONLY from National Probation Service:

  • Footsteps Women’s Service (CRS) North Yorkshire Provision for women (18+) on probation or leaving custody.
  • One to one or group interventions. Holistic support. In reach service provided to HMP Askham Grange.
  • Peer Advisor volunteers will be available to support, encourage and empower women to make positive changes.

Peer Advisor Network North Yorkshire Level 2 and 3 qualifications are also offered to men and women with any lived experience. People at this stage of their journey can then offer support via volunteer placement allowing them to use their unique lived experience to help others make positive changes.

This opportunity is also open to former service users.

Perinatal mental health service

Available to all ages. Provides perinatal mental health support to mothers who may be pregnant or up to a year post-natal with support around anxiety, depression and postnatal psychotic disorders.

Domestic Abuse community based support services (Adults)

Support is available for anyone aged 16 and over who is a direct victim or survivor of domestic abuse. Support is available for all genders and regardless of sexual orientation. The services available include:

  • Central Referral Hub providing triage, immediate advice, support and safety planning as required
  • Sanctuary Scheme and Target Hardening alongside specialist support and advice to enable victims, survivors and their children to remain safely in their own homes if they choose to do so
  • Community-based Domestic Abuse Practitioners (also known as IDVAs) to provide specialist 1-to-1 emotional and practical support, including support through any police investigation and/or court proceedings
  • Supported group work and peer support networks
  • Onward referrals and/or liaison with other agencies and support services as appropriate.

Practice Plus Group

Liaison and Diversion – North Yorkshire
This service supports individuals who come into contact with the criminal justice system by identifying and addressing their needs early on. Practitioners are based in police custody suites to raise awareness of individuals’ needs among staff, while support workers and peer support workers offer help in the community.

The team includes people with lived experience of the justice system, and they can liaise with other services on behalf of the individual to reduce the need for repeated explanations.

They also offer accompaniment to initial appointments to ease anxiety.

The service focuses on helping individuals access support across a wide range of areas, including mental and emotional health, neurodiversity, substance use, gender-specific needs, housing, employment, education, finances, and daily living.

Reconnect – North Yorkshire
Reconnect assists individuals transitioning from prison back into the community.

Support can begin up to 12 weeks before release, with a personalised support plan developed in advance. Peer support is available from those with similar experiences, and practical help is provided to register with healthcare providers such as GPs and dentists.

The service also facilitates access to community healthcare, including attending appointments and advocating on behalf of the individual for up to six months post-release.

Referral:

  • For Liaison and Diversion, individuals may be identified and supported directly in police custody or referred by professionals within the criminal justice system.
  • For Reconnect, referrals are accepted while the individual is still in prison, allowing support to begin before release.

Support for Children & Young People affected by domestic abuse

Support is available for children & young people aged 10 to 16 years who have been impacted by domestic abuse within the family, and/or are displaying inappropriate or unhealthy behaviour (also known as Child/Adolescent to Parent Violence or Abuse “C/APVA”) as a result of the domestic abuse they have experienced.

Support is also available for older young people displaying abusive behaviours within their own intimate relationships with other young people; those under 10 years or over 16 years up to their 18th birthday will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Support is available for all genders and regardless of sexual orientation.

The services available include:

  • Central Referral Hub providing triage, immediate advice, support and safety planning as required
  • Intensive 1-to-1 emotional and practical support for children and young people, including elements of each of the following where appropriate: o Early intervention resources for children and young people with emerging issues o Therapeutic Interventions for children and young people impacted by domestic abuse within their family
    • Trauma-informed interventions for children and young people using abusive behaviours within the family setting, based on the Respect Young People’s Programme, using a ‘whole family’ approach to address CAPVA o Specialist Young Perpetrators Programme for older young people using abusive behaviours within intimate relationships with other young people
  • Age-appropriate groupwork, which may include understanding healthy relationships, our behaviour and the impact on others, or self-esteem and how young people can use the environment and physical activity to regulate their emotions and look after their mental wellbeing.
  • Telephone and 1-to-1 support for parent/guardians with supporting Parent Information Packs providing advice on safety planning, boundary setting and behaviour management, online and in person workshops, and peer-led support networks
  • Onward referrals and/or liaison with other agencies and support services as appropriate.

Independent Sexual Violence Adviser (ISVA) Service

For all victims and survivors of all forms of sexual violence or abuse. The service offers:

  • Immediate advice, support and safety planning if required 1 to 1 emotional and practical support, including support through any police investigation and/or court proceedings
  • Support for (non-abusing) parents/guardians of young victims aged 12 years or under Supported group work and peer support networks

Supporting Victims

Survive

Survive offers a range of specialist trauma-informed services to help survivors of sexual violence. The team will offer you a safe space where you can be heard and listened to. They will help you explore your options and take the first step towards rebuilding your life and relationships and reaching your potential.

It doesn’t matter about background or personal circumstances. Survive is committed to helping any adult who has experienced sexual violence who approaches them for help to rebuild their life.

Crossroads

The Crossroads Adult Diversion scheme goal is to prevent or intervene early to divert people from the criminal justice process by addressing the underlying causes of their offending behaviour. The scheme has two elements:

  • A community-based support scheme, for adult women aged 18+ who may be at risk of entering the Criminal Justice System. Engagement will be on a voluntarily basis. Any agencies can refer and self referrals are welcomed.
  • A Pre-Court Diversionary support scheme, for adult women aged 18+ at point of arrest or voluntary attendance at police custody.

This is an alternative to prosecution, and if the individual accepts the referral to the Crossroads Adult Diversion scheme engagement will be mandatory, otherwise the individual may be referred back to North Yorkshire police to face prosecution.

Only North Yorkshire Police are able to refer to this element of the scheme.

Referral: Crossroads offer gender specific community-based support for adults who may be at risk of entering the Criminal Justice System, and a pre-court diversionary support service for adults at point of arrest or voluntary attendance at police custody.

Halo Project

Charity that supports victims of illegal cultural harms from black and minority communities. Available to women and children, the Halo Project strive to support survivors through their programmes to ensure survivors are believed, protected, supported and empowered to live independent and fulfilled lives.

They offer a support Service & advice line to support for women & girls who are at risk of or experiencing Illegal Cultural Harms.

New Beginnings Peer Support

Available to Women over 18+ and children as part of the whole family but not children individually. Peer support for women who have experienced domestic abuse. Courses they can offer are:

  • Own my Life Course – delivered to women who are no longer with their abuser and no longer residing at the same address. This course not only explains what domestic abuse is, it looks at why it happens.
  • Day programme for teens via schools – DAY is a unique multimedia programme that uses short films, advertisements and chart music to raise awareness and provide education about domestic abuse and exploitation in a relevant and exciting way.

Adult Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC)

Child Sexual Assault Assessment Service (CSAAS)

The CSAAS provides crisis support and forensic medical services to collect any evidence for all child victims of rape or sexual assault. Support is available for all children and young people aged 0 to 16 years who have disclosed sexual abuse or assault, or where it is suspected that it has happened.

Older young people up to their 19th birthday may also be seen by the CSAAS if they have additional needs or it is deemed to be clinically appropriate.

Women Wellbeing club

Women’s Wellbeing Club is a peer to peer community support group run for women by volunteers. The meetings are safe, confidential spaces for any woman to attend.

Independent Victim Adviser (IVA) service

The IVA service is provided by Victim Support. It provides face to face support in the community for victims of serious crime, vulnerable, persistently targeted and young victims (excluding sexual or domestic) whether or not they have made a report to North Yorkshire Police.

Liberty Links

Liberty Links is a mobile, multi-agency provision taking support services, advice and guidance to isolated women in rural communities in the form of a camper van vehicle.

Onboard the van women can access sanitary products, sexual health products, mobile phones (for those requiring a ‘safe’ phone or do not own a phone), and hot drinks and snacks.

We have two camper vans – one will be in the West of the county and the other in the East (Exact location subject to change)

Adult drug and alcohol service for North Yorkshire North Yorkshire Horizons offers a range of harm reduction, treatment and recovery support & interventions to help people address their substance use and achieve their goals.

Free, friendly, confidential outreach to young people across North Yorkshire who need support with, or information about drug and alcohol use. NY RISE offers a range of bespoke interventions tailored to the young persons needs.

+Choices: Support for Perpetrators of domestic abuse to change their behaviour

Support is available for anyone aged 16 years and over who is a perpetrator of domestic abuse, who wish to voluntarily address their abusive behaviour.

Support is available for all genders and regardless of sexual orientation. The services available include:

  • Triage/Short Intervention/Advice Sessions including signposting to other agencies and support services to address wider presenting needs as appropriate. Once any immediate needs have been addressed, perpetrators will be offered a tailored package of interventions most suitable to address their needs and guide them through the various stages of behaviour change.
  • Respect accredited 26-week group programme for standard risk perpetrators, providing a restorative setting to discuss and challenge abusive behaviour. Modules include Respect, Gender, Parenting, Emotional Intimacy, Sexual Respect and Support and Trust.
  • Respect accredited 1-to-1 programme for perpetrators who are more suited to individual sessions due to multiple needs or higher risk levels. Providing 20 weekly interactive sessions, using a range of delivery methods to examine issues such as trust, empathy and healthy relationships. Tailored sessions can be added to cover parenting, child development, jealousy, accountability, emotional intelligence, substance misuse, de-escalation and the impact of combat stress and PTSD for ex-service personnel.
  • High Harm/High Risk Interventions for perpetrators who pose a high risk of serious harm but are willing to engage in a 1-to-1 behaviour change programme. Based on the Respect accredited Drive model and using intensive case management to de-escalate immediate risk and multi-agency approach, working with the police, probation, children’s social services, housing, substance misuse and mental health teams to reduce risk and safeguard victims.
  • Peer Mentor training programmes for clients who are no longer abusive and provide opportunities to support other clients, share learning, develop skills and present positive role models instilling hope in new clients and those still working on change.
  • Integration with Victim Services through a dedicated Integrated Support Worker to provide victims with progress updates on perpetrators to help them make informed decisions, and to ensure the voice of the victim is represented across the services and within individual work with perpetrators.

Referral: All referrals will be initially assessed by a Domestic Abuse Intervention Worker, who will review all relevant information regarding risk to complete an initial risk assessment including assessing the perpetrator’s suitability for the programme, identification of their most immediate needs and any immediate action needed to safeguard their victim and any children from further harm.

Yorkshire MESMAC is one of the oldest and largest sexual health organisations in the country. They offer services to various communities across Yorkshire, including men who have sex with men, people of colour and other marginalised races, people misusing drugs, sex workers and LGBT+ young people and adults.

Libby Girls

St Giles Trust provide an assertive outreach service to young women and girls on the streets of Scarborough on Tues and Thursday evenings.

The service is called Libby GIRLS – a mobile support provision offering advice, support, guidance and intervention to young women and girls aged 10-25 in the Scarborough area.

Libby GIRLS stands for ‘Growing, Inspiring, Resilient, Leaders,’ and its aim is to be present where young women and girls get-together in the area to be best placed to offer support.

Reflect is a free support service in North Yorkshire for anyone facing a Pregnancy Choice and for those in need of support after experiencing Pregnancy or Neonatal Loss. They are a free support service and available to anyone living in North Yorkshire.

Domestic abuse support to residents of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller sites within North Yorkshire. Craven Homeless hub- provides support to people aged 18 or over who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

Harrogate Stay Well is for people aged 18 and over, who are experiencing mental health and housing issues in the Harrogate borough Horton Wellbeing Café runs in community venues in Selby, Eggborough, Tadcaster and Sherburn.

Survive and Community Counselling

An all age, counselling and talking therapy service to support victims of crime to cope and recover.

Available to women 16 and over. Community works based in Thirsk runs a range of services in North Yorkshire- one of which is Women’s wellness groups which provides women only peer support groups facilitated by an experienced support worker with access to different activities.

Refuge and Safe Accommodation based services for victims of Domestic Abuse

Support is available for all victims and survivors aged 16 years and over who are fleeing domestic abuse. Support is available for all genders and regardless of sexual orientation; Refuges are women (and children only) and self-contained, dispersed flats and houses are able to accommodate anyone.

The service offer includes:

  • Refuge and Safe Accommodation with tailored 1 to 1 emotional and practical support for up to 1 year in a safe and secure environment through a variety of purpose-built Refuge premises and dispersed Safe Accommodation throughout North Yorkshire and the City of York for all those fleeing domestic abuse, and their dependent children up to the age of 18 years.
  • Safe Haven scheme providing short-term emergency accommodation and respite opportunities for up to two months with host families; this will be particularly beneficial for those who may not be able to live in refuges, do not have access to public funds or live in rural communities.
  • Resettlement support for a period of up to 3 months following move on from the accommodation including onward referrals and/or liaison with other support services as appropriate.

Kyra Women’s Project

Kyra offer woman who need their support a one-stop-shop to begin a journey of change, to address poor mental health, loneliness & isolation, and find ways to deal with and move on from bad experience or trauma in their lives.

They are a community group work with victims and survivors of domestic abuse, provide health and wellness support, and provide counselling and emotional support.

York Women’s Counselling service (YWCS)

Available to adult women. Provides one to one counselling to women who are experiencing emotional and mental health difficulties as a result of current or past emotional stress or trauma.

They do charge but ask women to pay what they can afford- for some women this may be nothing and so the Vulnerable Women’s Fund helps fund sessions for these clients.

The Women’s Centre is a women-only space that offers inclusive, holistic and trauma-informed support for women.

SOS+ Service

Exploitation support service for children and young adults in York and North Yorkshire.

They support those aged 10-25 who have been victims of, or are at risk of all forms of exploitation, and those who repeatedly go missing.

They provide support to victims of exploitation to cope with the immediate impacts of the crime and to rebuild resilience from the harm experienced.

Drug & Alcohol Support

The service is available to local adults and young people in York who are affected by drug or alcohol misuse, as well as support for any children and family members who may have been impacted by their substance use.

The service offers one to one and group support, community alcohol detoxification, substitute prescribing and support to friends and family. The overall aim of the substance misuse service is to support individuals to work towards abstinence and support ongoing recovery.

This is a free and confidential advice and support service.

Referral: Individuals can be referred at various points in the criminal justice process including by police, courts, prison and probation. Individuals can also self-refer by calling: 01904 621 776

Chocolate & Co help to break down and overcome the barriers to employment, for those marginalised and living on the fringes of our community in York, due to struggling with an addiction, and/or having a criminal record.
