Consultation to close shortly – have your say on police funding

North Yorkshire Police is funded approximately half by central government and half by local residents via the council tax ‘precept’.

Before setting the precept each year, Julia Mulligan, your elected Police and Crime Commissioner, seeks people’s views about how much they are prepared to pay.

The quick and easy survey, that was launched in December, can be found at ‘tellJulia.com’.

Julia said: “It’s really important for me to hear your views, especially this year due to the new option provided by government. Paying an additional £1 a month will raise approximately £2.2m more for North Yorkshire Police than the 1.99% option, which was the previous maximum without invoking a referendum. This additional money would go towards the additional pay rise for our hard working officers and staff, improving the 101 service and protecting frontline services, including PCSOs.

“Having said this, North Yorkshire Police still need to make considerable savings as the cost of running the service is going up and the demands on the service are increasing. This will need to be a major focus in the coming couple of years, precept notwithstanding.

“I am also of course very mindful that many of us are feeling the pinch at the moment, so in making my decision, I will need to weigh up a wide range of factors, not least your views.”

The survey is available online at www.telljulia.com and paper copies are available at public buildings across North Yorkshire, such as police stations, libraries and council offices.
