Public questions
- Mr W – Support with road closures
Why has North Yorkshire Police withdrawn road closure support for Remembrance Day parades and how does it think it will be done in future?
Especially this year when councils have not precepted for it and the RBL are strictly forbidden to use RBL funds for road closures.
Without police support the parades can not take place. An insult to those we remember who gave their lives so that we have the freedom to remember their sacrifice. - Mr W – Police response to shoplifting
What are your plans to tackle shop related thefts and abuse of shopworkers? Theft is getting worse in convenience stores and shoplifters are getting more brazen and are not afraid to threaten our colleagues. I have reported crime multiple times through the online report form and through 111, all of these occasions have not been followed through, nobody comes to get cctv. The online portal is so much more work for us to do in store and we do not have time. Police need to start attending these shop thefts as they can easily build a case across multiple businesses as I know these thieves don’t just come to my store. These types of thefts may seem minor but they escalate to other forms of crime such as physical assault and drugs. I would really appreciate the feedback on how you intend to address this issue. - Mr C – Safeguarding
In March 2023, the Chief Constable said that North Yorkshire Police will be setting up dedicated safeguarding investigation teams, as previously used in North Yorkshire termed PVPU. Please could I have a progress update on the setting up of those teams ? - Mr C – protecting vulnerable people
In April 2023, the Crime Commissioner told North Yorkshire Police that they had let down the public over protecting vulnerable people. That followed a number of critical HMICFRS reports in that area. What work still needs to be done to rectify the situation ? - Mr H – Response to Burglary following HMICFRS report
following the HM Inspectorate of Constabulary report ‘The police response to burglary, robbery and other acquisitive crime – Finding time for crime’? (August 2022) https://www.justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/hmicfrs/publications/police-response-to-burglary-robbery-and-other-acquisitive-crime/
Have any changes been made to how North Yorkshire Police respond to burglaries, robbery and other acquisitive crime, and what have these been? - Mr – Complaints process
PSD operates to tackle largely issues with the NYP force. This involves complaints and serious allegations of corruption, but how can PSD operate effectively and inpartially when the officers are friends or close colleagues with the same officers they’re investigating?Do you feel more can be done to improve this? - Member of the public
A question about how North Yorkshire Police sets and enforces standards of behaviour for officers particularly in relation to sexual harassment and bullying?
Questions raised but to be answered at the next meeting with North Yorkshire fire and Rescue Service
- Mr T – Update following HMICFRS report
In January 2023, the HMICFRS released a report titled “State of Fire & Rescue: The Annual Assessment of Fire and Rescue in 2022”
There were 5 key areas where NYFRS were found to be Inadequate or Requires Improvement.
For reference page 30 of the report.
There was also a follow-up visit by HMICFRS in April, that acknowledged plans being put in place, but any results.
Please could I have an overview update of work on each of those areas to rectify the matter.
